Why is this bird attacking my window?

During the begining of the nesting season birds will set up territories in your backyard.  Sometimes they will see their own reflection in your house window or car mirror and decide that this is a rival bird needing to be taken care of.  They will constantly tap at your window until exhausted, and then come back an hour later and tap some more!  Between the constant noise and the mess left on your windows, this behavior can become annoying.  Common species include male cardinals, robins, and bluebirds although females and other birds may become issues also.

The only way to stop this behavior is to cover the reflection from the outside.  Drawing the blinds on the inside does nothing to eliminate the reflection.  Sometimes a screen or mesh will stop the bird from attacking but if not, either soaping the windows or covering them with paper is in order.  If it's attacking your car mirrors you can put bags over them and remove them when you leave.  You can cover your car with a sheet if its happening to your car windows.  Typically the bird will stop after the nesting season or once they are too busy caring for their young.
