Bird Houses

Bird food is not the only thing you can provide to attract birds. Housing is another great way to get birds to your backyard.

Houses should have:

  • The perfect size hole for the species you are trying to attract, too large a hole can let in predators as well.
  • Made of durable, sturdy wood such as cedar, or pine or recycled plastic.
  • Plenty of ventilation and drainage.
  • An easy way to clean and monitor the boxes.
  • NO PERCHES! Perches allow easy access for predators.
  • Easy hanging or mounting.

Remember to always be a good land lord. Boxes should be cleaned out at least once a year before nesting begins and should be monitored during the nesting season. Keep an eye out for predators such as snakes and raccoons and baffle boxes accordingly. Also keep tabs on nesting families and make sure no un-hatched eggs or deceased chicks remain in the boxes. Here are a few of our favorite houses.

Eastern Bluebird House

Bluebirds are a very popular species to attract to houses because they can have up to 3 broods of young in a single season. This house has many great features which makes it one of our favorites. It has an extension around the hole to make it harder for predators to reach in and raid the nest. It has a side opening for easy clean out as well as a hinged roof for viewing. It also meets all our standards for drainage, ventilation, durability, mounting, and functionality. Bluebird houses should be mounted in an open area, facing east at about 5 feet high.

Ultimate Bluebird House

This bluebird house has all the great features of the Eastern Bluebird house, and more. Its most popular feature is its plexi-glass viewing side to easily view the birds without disturbing the babies! Plus it has a metal reinforced hole to keep squirrels from enlarging it, and a mesh shelf to keep the nest out of debris. This is truly the "ultimate" of bluebird houses.

Chickadee/Wren House

Chickadees, wrens, nuthatches, and titmice will all nest in the same size box. This is a great house to put up to cover a wide range of birds and also not compete with your bluebirds. Chickadee/Wren houses can be hung or post mounted and this house opens at the top for viewing and on the side for cleaning.

Bluebird Pole and Baffle

The most efficient and safe way to mount a bluebird house is on a pole with a raccoon baffle. This method will keep out predators like snakes, raccoons, and cats and keep the birds safe. It also allows you to place the box in the most opportune place and not have to rely on an existing tree or post to mount it. Our bluebird pole has an auger base which twists easily into the ground and is exactly 5 foot once installed. Perfect height for a bluebird. This way you can place it in a location open enough for your birds to enjoy and facing east to get morning sun.

Nestbuilding Material

Birds like chickadees, wrens, and titmice will use different materials to make their nests. By providing organic materials like nest balls made out of cotton or wool, you can help them out.
