No, it is not best to stop feeding the birds in the summer. It is a misconseption that birds will become lazy or dependent on feeders if you feed them all year round. Birds only get up to 10 to 20 percent of thier diet from feeders. Unless you have trouble with bears at your feeders, it is more beneficial to continue feeding the birds throughout the spring and summer months. For starters, spring is one of the most important times to feed the birds. With the food they stored during the fall dwendling, and new crops not yet out, food is most scarce during this time. Feeding in the summer can be a joy also. Summer is the best time to observe a birds family life and see mating rituals. Also feeding birds year round brings you more birds and a bigger variety. Young birds will revisit the feeders thier parents raised them at.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office of Bird Management states: "If you enjoy feeding the birds, there is no reason to stop feeding the birds in the summer. You can do it year round. Feeding the birds in the summer will not make them lazy or too dependant."
The Cornell Lab of Ornithology scientists state; " Keep the restaurant open year round and offer a variety of seeds and suet."
